Retreat pricing confuses people because two listings at the same headline price can mean very different things. The number is rarely the problem — the omissions are.
What the headline price usually covers
For most listings, the package price includes accommodation, meals, and the scheduled programme. That bundling is why retreats look expensive next to a hotel room and reasonable next to a hotel room plus three meals plus daily classes.
Nearly always included
- Your bed for the stated nights
- Meals as described (check whether that is all three)
- Group sessions on the published schedule
- Use of shared practice and recovery spaces
Frequently excluded
- Travel to and from the venue
- Airport or station transfers
- Treatments, massages, and one-to-one sessions
- Single-occupancy supplements
- Travel insurance
The single-room question
Shared rooms are often the difference between an accessible price and an uncomfortable one. Solo travellers frequently assume a supplement is mandatory — on many retreats it is optional, and the shared option is both cheaper and more sociable.
If the listing does not state room configuration clearly, ask before booking rather than after.
Where the real savings are
Shoulder season
The same venue, the same teacher, and a meaningfully lower price — usually with better availability and smaller groups. Late autumn and early spring are consistently undervalued.
Shorter formats
A well-run weekend can deliver most of the benefit of a week for a fraction of the cost. For a first retreat, this is almost always the better bet.
Closer to home
Flights often cost more than the price difference between a domestic and an overseas retreat. A venue two hours away also means no jet lag eating into your first two days.
Questions worth asking before you pay
- What exactly is included in the package price?
- Is the single supplement optional?
- What is the cancellation window, in plain terms?
- Are transfers available, and at what cost?
- Is a deposit refundable, and until when?
